Welcome to Geek Dad Makes

Welcome to Geek Dad Makes

Hey, I’m Sky

Welcome to my corner of the internet where I document the stuff I build, break, and (occasionally) fix.

If you’re here, you probably share the same itch I do — the need to take things apart, figure out how they work, and then make them better. Or at least make them do something they weren’t originally designed to do.

The workspace

What You’ll Find Here

This blog is my workshop notebook made public. Expect:

  • 3D printing projects — both resin and FDM, from functional prints to experimental designs
  • Smart home automation — building a custom system that actually works the way I want it to
  • Maker experiments — CAD designs, hardware hacks, and whatever catches my interest
  • Real talk — the failures, the iterations, the “why didn’t that work” moments that make the wins worth it

I’m not here to sell you courses or pretend everything I touch turns to gold. This is documentation of the process — messy, iterative, and real.

Projects in progress

The Lab

My workspace is where the magic (and occasional disasters) happen. You’ll see it pop up in posts — shelves of filament, printers running overnight, tools scattered across every available surface. It’s organized chaos, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Builds and experiments

Right now I’m deep into building an AI-powered smart home system with my digital companion, Elara. She helps manage everything from morning briefings to automating my 3D printing pipeline. It’s ambitious, it’s probably overkill, and it’s exactly the kind of project I love.

Why “Geek Dad Makes”?

Because I’m a dad who happens to be a massive geek, and I make stuff. Simple as that.

My kids see me tinkering constantly — printers running, code on screens, projects in various states of completion. I want them to grow up knowing that if something doesn’t exist, you can build it. If something’s broken, you can fix it. And if you don’t know how, you figure it out.

Making stuff

Let’s Build Together

I’m sharing my builds, my process, and my mistakes because that’s how we all get better. If you’ve built something similar, hit me up. If you’ve got a better way to do something I’m struggling with, I want to hear it.

This is just the beginning. Stick around — it’s going to get interesting.

— Sky

Follow along as I document builds, share project files, and figure out how to make cool stuff without burning down the house.
